Welcome to your AMSA
Want to meet medical students from Australia and New Zealand? Think you’re game to attend the biggest student conference in the world? Want to be inspired by world-renowned speakers? Do you like the sound of mouth-watering tacos?
The Australian Medical Students Association (AMSA) can satisfy all of these desires! AMSA is the peak representative body of medical students, with representatives from each Australian Medical School who act to voice your opinions. AMSA acts to broadcast and discuss issues facing medical students, advocating to governments, universities and relevant medical bodies to better your experience at medical school. This includes arguing for guaranteed internship places for all graduates and for changes to the bonded medical student program.
How can I get involved?
AMSA holds many events throughout the year to engage medical students from across Australia. These include:
Convention is AMSA’s largest event. This year’s Convention will be held in Hobart from 7th – 13th July. The academic program features five days of inspirational and thought-provoking addresses and workshops from some incredible speakers. The social events during the evening will provide an opportunity to engage with 1500 other medical students – in a notoriously colourful and busy social program. See the website for more information.
Global Health Conference (GHC)
Want to start your own NGO and change the world? GHC will be held in Sydney this year from 16th – 19th August, featuring superb speakers centred on humanitarian issues both around the world, and here in Australia. See the website for more details.
National Leadership Development Seminar (NLDS)
AMSA’s premier academic event is held in Canberra in May. It is a unique forum which provides passionate and engaged medical student with a platform to discuss ideas, network and workshop their ideas into advocacy campaigns and national projects for tomorrow. See nlds.amsa.org.au for more details.
There are a multitude of other ways you can get involved in AMSA, such as co-authoring an official policy document and attending AMSA council that meets 3 times a year. AMSA gives you the opportunity to meet new people, get involved in the medical community and bolster your CV. Please feel free to contact me for more information.
